The IGP heartland is unquestionably Languedoc-Roussillon which is home to 19 of the 41 IGPs de petites zones. IGP Alpilles, for example, is named after the Alpilles hills in northern Provence and could never be confused with the exclusive Les Baux de Provence AOP, which shares its territory. Their evocative, sometimes lengthy, names are intentionally designed to avoid confusion with nearby AOC titles. These have tighter production regulations, sometimes approaching the strictness of AOP laws. The 41 most location-specific titles are classified as IGP de petites zones. An example of the latter is the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. The remaining departements either produce insufficient quantities of wine to warrant a title or are adequately covered by AOP appellations.
